June 17, 2025 – Desertification and Drought day

What is the connection between demography and desertification?
Are population growth, urbanization, and migration linked to land degradation in drylands?

On the occasion of the Desertification and Drought day, CSFD is publishing its new thematic Dossier – the 15th in the series – which provides insights into this complex issue. The authors demonstrate, through examples from various dryland regions across the globe, that desertification and demographic dynamics are, in most cases, independent processes. When links do exist, they are often indirect and vary depending on the territories, production systems, and lifestyles of the societies involved.

This Dossier was written by Emmanuel Chauvin (geographer, University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès, LISST), Bénédicte Gastineau (demographer, IRD, LPED), and Christine Raimond (geographer, CNRS, Prodig), who also present a video pitch outlining the key points of the report.

The English version will be published soon.
