This year, the three Rio conventions are holding their Conference of the Parties (COP). After Cali for the “Biodiversity” COP, Baku for the “Climate” COP, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification will hold its 16th COP in Riyadh from December 2 to 13, 2024. Land will be at the heart of discussions and negotiations.
CSFD President Jean-Luc Chotte-IRD, accompanied by Quirico Migheli (University of Sassari, Italy, CSFD member) will be part of the French research delegation.
As Scientific and Technical Correspondent, Jean-Luc Chotte will also take part in the negotiations on behalf of Europe and its member states for the decision-making texts relating to the Convention’s Scientific and Technical Committee (STC).
For this 16th COP, the French scientific community has been very active:
- the French Scientific Committee on Desertification
- IRD
- INRAE
- CIRAD
- CNRS Ecology and Environment Institute
- Data Terra infrastructure
- the 4P1000 Initiative
The messages conveyed by the French scientific community and its partners will focus on :
- agroecology to adapt to aridit
- soil health as a lever in the fight against desertification
- the need to produce quality data to inform political decisions
- the importance of science in the deployment of the Great Green Wall initiative
- the role of science in the education and training of stakeholders
- the importance of sustainable food systems as a lever for combating land degradation at territorial level.

A position paper was drafted by CSFD members for this occasion on the theme of “Governance, knowledge, management: for an integrated, multi-stakeholder approach to issues relating to land, biodiversity, climate and food security”.
