What is the link between demographics and desertification?
Are population growth, urbanization, and migration linked to land degradation in dry areas?
The authors of this report show, through examples from different drylands around the world, that desertification and demographic dynamics are, in most cases, independent processes. The links between these processes, when they exist, are mostly indirect and vary according to the territories, production systems, and lifestyles of societies.
This dossier was written by Emmanuel Chauvin (geographer, University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès, LISST, member of the CSFD), Bénédicte Gastineau (demographer, IRD, LPED) and Christine Raimond (geographer, CNRS, Prodig, member of the CSFD), who also offer a video pitch to present the main points.
